After you’re done with binging on sweets this season, and the germs are done binge attacking on your tooth, good chances are that you’ll be left with a decayed tooth and a good gap somewhere in your amazing smile!

To fill this gap, Dentists usually recommend an implant. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root. Your jawbone fuses with the implant to provide a secureplatform for an artificial tooth (or dental prosthesis). Abutments are the connecting pieces that join the artificial tooth (or dental prosthesis) to the implants.

Besides, being a connecting piece, abutments are necessary to help gum tissue heal around the implant site. And most importantly it functions to screw into the implant and securely holds your crown (your fake tooth) in place.

Abutments can be divided on various bases but in the simplest sense they’re divided on as hexed and non-hexed. As far as possible, the dentist will give you a hexed abutment, as it gives an anti-rotation feature. However, if your abutment needs a slightly different angle than the doctor may recommend a non-hexed abutment with which you’ll have to be extra careful.

On a more relevant note, for patients, abutments can be divided based on its material being titanium or zirconia. Zirconia is white in color and is customized, gives the illusion of a real tooth, and thus is heavier on the pocket while the titanium one is usually more easily available and affordable.
